Hit-and-run driver kills rescuers at accident scene

Friday, September 7, 2012, was a black day in Fagba Ishaga in Lagos State. Two men who were rescuing an accident victim on a railway line, including bystanders were hit by a speeding car.

Eyewitnesses said one of the men died on the spot while the other died on the way to the hospital. Many others were critically injured.

At Fagba railway level crossing where the accident occurred, an eyewitness, Peter Adebayo, said, “About 10.15pm, an oncoming train hit a car trying to cross. It was damaged and some of the tricycle operators in our park, rushed to get the car off the road and help the injured lone occupant.

“There was a crowd there and others who were waiting to board taxis or buy things because some women sell there in the night.

“A white Toyota Sienna ran into the crowd hitting everything on its way. By the time we rushed to the scene. Many people were already on the ground unconscious.”

A tricycle operator, Moruf Oguntoyinbo, was said to have died on the spot. He was the Chairman of the Fagba-Puposola Unit of the Tricycle Riders’ Association at the park.

Another tricycle operator, 42-year-old Musbau Adeyinka, popularly called Murphy in the area, died on his way to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

Musbau’s wife, Wosila, told PUNCH Metro, she was shocked when she heard about her husband’s death.

“He made a lot of promise to me and our six children, which he had yet to fulfil. I don’t even know how I would carry the burden of our children,” she said.

On Tuesday, when our correspondent visited one of the survivors, Idowu Babatunde, at Mercy Hospital, Fagba, he could not recollect what happened to him.

A doctor at the hospital, Kareem Shehu, said Idowu was brought to the hospital unconscious. He said although an x-ray had been taken to determine if the victim had any internal injury, Idowu could still not recollect how the accident happened.

Idowu’s wife, Folashade, said she learnt that her husband was one of the rescuers before he was hit by the bus.

Another victim, Bimbo Atanda, who had a broken leg, is being treated at home.

“I was going to a vigil, but I stopped at the bus stop to buy bread. I can’t even say where the vehicle came from. All I remember is being hit and, later found myself in the hospital,” Atanda said.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the driver of the bus has been arrested.

A police source identified him as Francis Adewunmi. He was said to have fled immediately after the accident, but was arrested when he came back to the scene early the following morning to retrieve his bus.

He is currently being detained at the Oko-Oba Police Division, Ishaga.

Patron of the Keke Owner’s Association, Mr. Hassan Balogun, told our correspondent that other people might have died.

He said, “We don’t know what happened to other victims because we only know of our members whom we rushed to the hospital. A lot of other people were rushed to different hospitals.

“Some of them may have even died, because when it happened everybody just rushed there and took away their own people.

“We took away members of our association and others we knew because we could not take care of all the victims. It was a really a terrible day.”

When the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Ngozi Braide, was contacted, she declined to comment.

“I don’t know you, I cannot release any information to you,” she said.

But a police source, privy to the case at Oko-Oba, said Adewunmi would soon be charged with manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol.

22-year-old Fulani man kills mum over N59,000

The Kogi State Police Command has said that a 22-year-old Fulani man macheted his mother to death in a bid to prevent her from knowing he stole her N59,000. While conducting newsmen round some vehicles and firearms recovered from men of the underworld in the last two weeks, the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Katsina, narrated how the man, identified as Idris Mohammed committed the heinous crime.

According to the commissioner, Mohammed came from Suleja to visit his mother, Uhura Garuba, 40 and met her counting the money. The police boss said he later carted away the money and fled back to Suleja but when his mother threatened to consult a spiritualist to ascertain who the thief was, Mohammed agreed to follow her only to ambush and machete her to death.

Katsina also disclosed that they had nabbed a man identified as Bright Simon who had been sending threat text massages to people that they would bomb the Obajana Cement. He said it was discovered that the threat messages were masterminded by a staffer of the company.

Also, three suspected robbers who snatched N400,000 at gunpoint from a woman in Ofu Local Government Area of the state were engaged and subdued by the police ambush squad. The money was recovered with three AK47 riffles and a jackknife. Katsina also disclosed that a truckload of substances suspected to be Indian hemp were neatly tucked in 129 parcels and seven bags.

He said the driver of the vehicle, along with the passengers, on sighting the police left the vehicle with the consignment and fled to the bush. Similarly, the police boss said some robbers who snatched an exotic car from a woman in Gwagwalada with some money and apparels were arrested in Kogi while transitting to Anambra State. Items recovered include six vehicles, three Ak47 riffles, three locally made pistols, assorted handsets, among others.

WOMAN GIVES BIRTH TO HORSEIN EDO CHURCH [IMAGE]

Worshippers of the World
Liberation Ministry located along
old Sapele-Benin express road
on Tuesday took to their heels
during a prophesy programme
when a female member
delivered a horse.

The horse was however dead by
the time Journalists visited the
church.

It was gathered that the woman
whose identity was not yet
known started screaming during
the prayer session and began to
bleed from the womanliness
before the horse came out.

The General Overseer of the
church, Evangelist Silva Wealth,
said he was still amazed at what
came out of the woman.

He told Journalists that during
prayers a revelation came that
there was a woman with an
issue and that something was
blocking her womb.

Silva said as prayers intensified,
the woman started screaming
and bleeding started when the
object came out.

The cleric said he couldnt
confirm whether the horse was
dead or alive because he didnt
go near it.

I cant describe the object. We
have seen people that vomited
several things during our
service but not this type of
thing. God has been blessing our
ministry with prophesies and
miracles, he said.

People rushed to the church to
catch a glimpse of the horse
when news of the delivery
filtered into town.

Idris Abdulkareem To Obasanjo : 'You Be Bad Papa'

The war between former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and dancehall music star, Ediris Abdulkareem over his 2004 hit track, Jaga Jaga is fast becoming a tale of child who says his mother will not sleep, he too will not sleep.

Mr. Lecturer, as fans and admirers would call him is ready to dance with OBJ, since he is not ready to let the sleeping dog lies.

In 2004, Abdulkareem third album, Jaga Jaga, which lamented the corruption and suffering in Nigeria was banned from playing on radio by Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, although, it continued playing in nightclubs and parties.

Since then, many thought the case had been interred and faded into a cultural pot of time, only to resurface recently at a forum in Lagos when the retired military general lambasted the singer again, an indication that his indignation towards the Kano-born crooner is still raging and roiling.

Angered by OBJs comment, the singer fought back through his twit account, by calling the Ota farmer his mugu. He tweeted:
obvious that Obasanjo can do without me.

I am his joy therapy. Mr ex-president, Nigeria still dey jagajaga, in fact worse pass jagajaga, @idrisAbdulkarm twitted.

President Obasanjo if you truly love Goodluck as u claimed, why dont you talk to your fellow Boko Haram member to let Goodluck rule in peace.

Eedris didnt stop there as he went on to call the PDP leader a mugu Mr expresident, I heard you were talking about me in ur last interview hahahahahhahah its obvious you cant do without me. You are my mugu. Obasanjo na my mugu oooo na jeje i dey, u dey look for trouble oooo. hahahahahhahahahahhahahah.
Mr ex president, u be my mugu! he added.

Not still satisfied, Idris has released a new single, entitled Baba in his defense and to buttress his point that Nigeria is truly Jaga Jaga.

HERE

The lyric goes thus: apa na you born me but I no send you again because you no be good Papa, he chants.

Which kind Papa dey oppress im pikin/Which kind Papa no like im pikin/Which kind Papa no want make im pikin grow. I tire, I never see this kind papa. For this moment I disown you/I no like you/ I dey look for another papa.

12 years ago Nigeria Jagajaga/Today Nigeria don pafuka/You be bad Papa/You no be fine Papa/You dey oppress pikin/Even for Abeokuta they no gbadun your style, he says.

I de my house dey watch television na im I see baba Ota dey yarn say my papa na yamayama/Say my mama na jagajaga. He say na Eedris be the problem of Nigeria. If you talk again, I go sing another. You say make them no give me show but I still dey survive. The road to your house for Ota na jagajaga/Make you sidon for your house make I live mylife, he says.

The song is currently trending online as people are beginning to air their national frustration through it.

It would be recalled that Idris was one of the Remedies group before going solo. His debut album, P.A.S.S. (Pains and Stress = Success) was released in 2002 on Kennis Music. Released the same year and also on same label was Mr. Lecturer, which addressed the problem of students using money and sex to solicit higher grades in Nigerian colleges and universities. Also in 2004, Abdulkareem came to international attention as a result of a scuffle with American rapper 50 Cent on board an aircraft at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.

MTN Donates N500,000 For Shot Baby’s Treatment

Mobile telecommunications company, MTN, has paid for the N500,000 needed for treatment of the one-year-old baby Taiwo Lawal, who was shot by armed robbers in the Gbagada area of Lagos on Sunday.

The company’s Public Relations Manager, Mr. Funsho Aina, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.

“We have paid the needed N500, 000 into the family’s account today in response to the PUNCH Metro’s story. Ceremonial cash presentation to the family holds tomorrow (Friday) at our Head Office, Golden Plaza, Falomo, Ikoyi,” Aina said.

Taiwo was among those hit by the robbers’ bullets when they opened fire on some policemen in Gbagada area during one of the simultaneous robberies that took place in different parts of the state on Sunday.

FG DEBUNKS RUMOUR OF FIRST LADY ÂS ILLNESS.

ABUJA The special adviser to the
president on Media and Publicity, Reuben
Abati has denied reports that the First
Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan was
indisposed and flown abroad for proper
medical attention. While responding to reports which
emanated from online news platforms,
Abati said the story was a rumour and
there is nothing like that. Earlier, First Lady spokesman, Ayo
Osinlu, had told the media that Dame
Patience Jonathan did actually travel
abroad, but she was only away to take a
moments rest given that she had not
taken a rest since President Jonathans election last year. He said: If you look at her itinerary in
August, you will be wondering how she
was able to accomplish that.
In the course
of this week, she will be back home. But
remember, it all depends on her plans. However, Nigerians in Germany have
debunked Presidential statement that the
First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan only
travelled abroad to rest, without
indicating exactly where she is. Media reports last night quoted the
office of the First Lady of saying that
Patiences foreign trip was to take time
off to rest and not for medical purposes.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR HAVING SEXWITH HER DOG

Ladies who engage in this
absurdity should know that this
is one of the ways diseases
move from animals to humans
and cause damages. A woman has been arrested by
police in Pretoria, South Africa,
over allegations that she has
been having sex with her dog
for some time. According to sources, the police
secured a search warrant to
search the womans home on
Wednesday after a complaint by
an animal protection
organisation. An anonymous person dropped
off a DVD recording of the
womans activities at the
organisations premises. During
the search of her home, police
found more recordings of the
woman having sexual
intercourse with the dog. It appears that she was
recording these activities all
along. She was immediately
arrested after we searched the
house, said a police source. The
woman is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on
Thursday on a charge of
bestiality.

Nigeria’s First Lady Hospitalized In Germany after Eating Food Poison

Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, has been in a hospital in Germany in the last four days, Abuja State House sources have told Naijaloaded.com, undergoing treatment for food poisoning.

The sources say Mrs. Jonathan, who is also a Permanent Secretary in the Bayelsa State civil service, was airlifted to the hospital by an air ambulance in midweek under emergency medical conditions.

Presidency sources stated that the emergency airlift departed for Wisbanden, Germany, but it is not clear if her treatment was being undertaken in that city. They said she was only able to speak earlier today, four days after her arrival, because the illness had been so severe that she lost her voice.

Our sources could not say when she will return to the country. Nigeria’s political leaders and their families routinely seek expensive medical attention abroad, an irony occasioned by their failure to develop the same facilities at home. In the past few years, two former First Ladies have died on foreign hospital beds.

9ja First lady Patience Jonathan Suffers Food Poisoning; Airlifted To Germany For Treatment

There were speculation on Sunday
night that the wife of President
Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, might
be undergoing treatment in
Germany for food poisoning.
An online news portal,
Saharareporters, had reported that
Patience had been undegoing
treatment in a German hospital for
about four days.

The news medium reports that
Patience was airlifted to the hospital
by an air ambulance last week under
emergency medical conditions.
It also quoted Presidency sources
who said that the emergency airlift
departed for Wisbanden, Germany
but could not confirm if her
treatment was being undertaken in
that city.

Efforts made by The PUNCH to
confirm both the health and
whereabouts of the Presidents wife
on Sunday night were abortive.

Calls placed to the aides of both the
President and his wife were not
picked. These aides included Special
Adviser to the President on Media
and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati; and
Senior Special Assistant to the
President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin
Okupe.

Cynthia’s Murder: Hotel Workers Sacked For Negligence

The management of Cosmilla Hotel in Lagos, where the late Miss Cynthia Udoka Osokogu was murdered by some men she met on Facebook, has sacked all the staff of the hotel that were on duty, the day of the murder.

The hotel, which is located at Lake View Estate, Amuwo Odofin in Lagos State, is said to have a tradition of ‘proper screening’ of its guests at the point of checking-in, by demanding valid identification of prospective guests.

The front-desk officer was said to have breached the established procedure, paving way for difficulty in identifying the body of the deceased as her attackers had taken away all items that could assist in identifying her.

The hotel rules demand that guests must present their ID cards or passport before given a room in the hotel.

The fake identities of the suspects had made it difficult for the police at Area ‘F’ Command to quickly solve the murder riddle.

Although only two of the suspects were paraded before journalists at the Lagos State Police Command, two others, Orji Osita and Maduako Chukwunonso, who were the pharmacists that sold the drug, used to sedate the late Cynthia, were on Monday, arraigned before the Yaba Magistrates’ Court with the main suspects.

The case is adjourned to the 3rd of October.

The Delta State-born victim who met her untimely death is set to be buried September 7.

35 Year Old Man Rapes Three Year Old Girl In Lagos

It happened yesterday afternoon at Adeniji Adele, Dolphin Estate, Phase 2. We gathered that a little girl ran into a woman's shop crying. The woman asked her why she was crying, but the little girl couldn't really express herself. She just kept pointing at a particular direction, and crying. Then a few minutes later, the shop owner saw a man approaching her shop and calling on the girl to follow him. The woman asked the man who he was and why he was after the girl. The man probably realized the women wasn't going to release the girl to him, so he tried to run. The woman raised an alarm immediately shouting ole ole, thinking he was a kidnapper, not knowing he had done something much worse.

Youths in the area thinking the man was a thief descended on him. The man kept saying he wasn't a thief that the little girl was known to him. They turned to the girl and pressured her to tell them what the guy had done to her; the 3 year old told them that the man had taken her to the last floor of a 3 story building and hurt her. They checked the girl's panties and saw blood all over her private area. The blood had even dropped to her legs but nobody noticed on time.

On hearing this, the youths descended on him once again, this time more brutal. They stripped him unclad, and beat him with stick, stones, bottles, etc until someone called the police who then took him away.

Married Woman Dies During Sex With Another Married Man

The level of infidelity in
marriages these days is so scary,
some unmarried people are
beginning to wonder if marriage
is worth it afterall. Why do
people get married and still
continue to sleep around?

A married man, Amaechi Uche
Padmore, has been arrested and
charged to a Lagos court on the
allegation that his lover, Edith
Nwokolo, another man's wife,
died while he was having sex
with her.

Uche is now facing a murder
charge at Ebute Metta
Magistrate’s court, Lagos over
her death.

The lovers, who are both
married, engaged in sex romp at
94, Mushin Road, Mushin, Lagos,
Southwest Nigeria. It was
gathered that while Uche was on
top of Edith, she started
breathing heavily, jerked and
died. They were reported to
have dated each other before
they got married to different
spouses.

Sources said immediately the
incident happened, Uche, who
has three kids, abandoned his
pant and shoes and fled. Edith
was found dead on top of abed
and a neigbour who saw Uche
with her before she died, raised
the alarm and the matter was
reported to the police at Olosan
Division.

He was arrested and arraigned
on Wednesday for murder
before the presiding Magistrate,
Mr. T. Aborinwa under section
221 of the criminal code law of
Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.
Her death triggered controversy
as the deceased woman’s family
insisted that Uche was
responsible. But the autopsy
report presented at the court
showed that she died of heart
related problem. When the
matter came up at the court,
Uche pleaded not guilty.

The presiding magistrate
granted him bail since the
autopsy showed she died as a
result of heart problem.

WORLD BANK BUDGETS $300M FOR YOUTHEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA

Abuja – The World Bank has budgeted
300 million dollars for Youth
Employment and Social Support Operation
(YESSO) scheme in Nigeria, Marie-
Francoise Mariel-Nelly, Country Director
of the World Bank in Nigeria said. Mariel-Nelly made the statement in Abuja
on Tuesday at the 53rd Annual conference
of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES).
“We are preparing a Youth Employment
and Social Support operation (YESSO)
aiming at supporting the provision of immediate work opportunities and skills
development for unemployed youths and
women from poor households,” she said.
Mariel-Nelly said increasing youth
employment was one of the bank’s global
priorities as it had observed that one in five of all new job seekers in Africa
were Nigerians.
“The 300 million dollars project will
cover all parts of the country in up to 20
states,” she said.
Mariel-Nelly also said that the World Bank with support from the EU would
launch the State Employment and
Expenditure for results project
(SEEFOR) in the Niger Delta region.
She said the aim was to take youths off
the streets as well as improve the country’s infrastructure.
She said that through ACCESS Nigeria,
the bank had demonstrated commitment to
opening employment opportunities for
graduates of Information Communication
Technology through target training in core competencies benchmarked to global
industry standards.
“The bank provides matching grant as seed
money to empower young farmers to adopt
new technologies and acquire capital assets,
which they use to undertake a wide range of value addition and small-scale income
generating activities,” she said.
She said youth unemployment was a threat
to social and political stability as was
evident in the youth restiveness in the
Niger Delta. Mariel-Nelly said the bank would
continue to support government efforts to
address the challenge of unemployment in
the country (NAN)

VÁGÍNÁ TIGHTENING CRÉÁM FINALLY LAUNCHED

An Indian company has launched
what it claims is the country's
first Vágíná tightening cream,
saying it will make women feel
"like a vírgin" again. The
company says it is about empowering women, but critics
say it is doing the opposite. It is certainly a bold claim. As the
music starts playing on the
advertisement for the 18 Again
cream, a sari-clad woman is
singing and dancing.
It is an unusual take on Bollywood. "I feel like a vírgin," she croons,
although the advert makes it
clear she is not.
Her shocked in-laws look on,
before her husband joins her for
some salsa-style dancing. "Feels like the very first time,"
she continues, as she is twirled
around.
Cut away to her mother-in-law
who begins by responding with
a disgusted look on her face, but by the end of the advert even
she has been won over, and is
seen buying the product online
The makers of 18 Again, the
Mumbai-based pharmaceutical
company Ultratech, say it is the first of its kind in India (similar
creams are already available in
other parts of the world such as
the USA), and fills a gap in the
market. Ultratech's owner, Rishi Bhatia,
says the cream, which is selling
for around $44 (£28), contains
natural ingredients including
gold dust, aloe vera, almond and
pomegranate, and has been clinically tested. "It's a unique and revolutionary
product which also works
towards building inner
confidence in a woman and
boosting her self esteem," says
Mr Bhatia, adding that the goal of the product is to "empower
women". Mr Bhatia says the product is not
claiming to restore a woman's
vírginity, but to restore the
emotions of being a vírgín.
"We are only saying, 'feel like a
vírgin' - it's a metaphor. It tries to bring back that feeling when a
person is 18." But the company's advertising
strategy has attracted criticism
from some doctors, women's
groups and social media users,
who say the product reinforces
the widely held view in India that pré-marital séx is something
to be frowned upon, a taboo
which is even seen as sinful by
some. "This kind of cream is utter
nonsense, and could give some
women an inferiority complex,"
argues Annie Raja from the
National Federation of Indian
Women, which fights for women's rights in the country.
Ms Raja says that rather than
empower women, the cream will
do the opposite, by reaffirming a
patriarchal view that is held by
many here - the notion that men want all women to be virgins
until their wedding night. "Why
should women remain a virgin
until marriage? It is a woman's right to make
loveual relations with a man, but
society here still says they
should not until they are brides."

AVIATION MINISTER BLOCKS AIRLINE FROM ABUJA

Minister of Aviation Stella Oduah has denied
approval for some foreign airlines to extend their
services to Abuja airport in addition to Lagos
where they now operate, sources told Daily
Trust in Abuja. A senior government official told our reporter
that three foreign airlines—Emirates, Turkish and
Etihad—have sought approval of the Nigerian
aviation authorities to begin commercial flights
to Abuja but the minister “has refused to grant
the request.” Instead, Mrs. Oduah told them to consider flying
to Enugu, so as not to overstretch the facilities
in Abuja. A spokesman for Mrs Oduah confirmed to Daily
Trust that the minister has asked the airlines to
“explore the opportunity of extending their
operations to Enugu” instead of concentrating
in Abuja and Lagos. The three airlines which now operate to the
Murtala Mohammed International Airport,
Lagos, sought for approvals to be landing in
Abuja as a second destination in Nigeria because
of the increasing number of passengers they get
from the capital city and other parts of the North. “Some of the requests have been filed over a
year ago to the Federal Ministry of Aviation but
no approvals have been given,” the source said. “When they met with the minister few weeks
ago, she queried why they insisted on Abuja as a
second destination. “She instead told them to commence flight
operations to Enugu airport. But they told the
minister that they have high number of
passengers wanting to have a direct flight from
Abuja.” The aviation minister then suggested another
option to the three airlines which is that she
would link them with local airlines that will fly
their passengers from Abuja to Enugu for
onward boarding of their international flights
out of the country. The source said the minister’s decision appeared
to put the North at a disadvantage, especially
given that only Egypt Air now flies to Kano after
KLM ceased its service to the Malam Aminu Kano
International Airport. When contacted for comment, the minister’s
special assistant on media, Mr. Toyin Okpaise,
said it was in an effort to ensure the
diversification of airline operation in the country
that the minister asked the three airlines to
explore the opportunity of extending their operations to Enugu rather than concentrate in
Lagos and Abuja. “Even if they think most of their customers are in
Abuja, they can still operate from Enugu and use
domestic flights to connect the passengers to
Abuja,” he said. “That way, we shall develop our local airlines and
make all the airports busy. It is the duty of the
minister to ensure that flight operations are not
allowed to concentrate in just one place.” When contacted, Managing Director of Turkish
Airlines, Mr. Ali Bulut, said he would not speak
about the details of their discussions with the
regulators because the regulators are co-
operating with them. He said talks have advanced and he is positive
they would be given approval. He also declined to
disclose the specific conditions the regulators
have given them before they could be allowed to
fly into Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport,
Abuja. Our correspondent could not get a response
from Emirates Airlines, which is a United Arab
Emirates company, as an email sent to them was
not replied. An official of Etihad, also a UAE airline, told our
reporter in Lagos that the company has not
applied to fly into Abuja. But in August 2008, Etihad announced its plans
to begin service to Lagos and Abuja in the first
quarter of 2009. “The four-times-a-week service
will employ an Airbus 330-200 aircraft, which
can accommodate 262 passengers in a two-
class configuration while carrying 14 tonnes of cargo,” said a report in a United Arab Emirates
newspaper, The National. “The route will fly in a triangular pattern with
flights from Abu Dhabi flying to Lagos first and
then onwards to Abuja, before returning to the
